Pros and Cons of Online College Education

Author, Colleges, Ransom Stone, Review, Universities

While online classes lack the social side of learning, online college education is the future for working adults who need to obtain a degree while maintaining their career and family obligations.

Advantages of obtaining your college degree online include:

1.Convenience of scheduling your study and class work around your personal and professional life.

2.Online education is the only practical choice for busy adults. Campus options require needless sacrifices of time and money.

3.Study from any location where you have access to a computer and the Internet.

4.Not restricted to colleges and programs in your local area. You can choose from a wide array of degrees and courses.

5.Eliminates travel time, gasoline costs, and parking hassles.

6.For many adults, not having to participate in the social aspects of college life is a blessing.

7.Physical handicaps are easier to accommodate.

8.Work at your own pace within the deadlines for assignments. You are not dragged down by the slowest students as in a traditional classroom.

9.Enter class discussion boards and complete assignments at any hour of the day or night.

10.As you master your courses, you develop your computer and Internet skills at the same time.

11.Students take responsibility for their education and become self-motivated and self-reliant.

12.If English is your second language, you may find it easier to communicate online.

Disadvantages:

1.Students who lack motivation and who have poor time management skills may not succeed online.

2.A lack of computer skills will make mastering new routines and software difficult at first.

3.Instructors may not be available when you need them.

4.Harder to develop a close bond with your professors.

5.If the student is on a dial up Internet connection, the slow speed may become frustrating.

6.If you are attending college for the college or social atmosphere, the best online will do is live chat. Younger students miss the peer interaction.

7.Family has to understand that you need undisturbed time to complete your assignments.

8.Tuition costs may be higher than expected to cover the technology costs.

9.Some employers may not give your online degree the same respect as a campus based degree.

Online education is not for everyone. Before you take out those student loans, make sure getting your college degree online is the right option for you.
